A Study on the Analysis of Curriculum in Nursing

Abstract
1. The Purpose
The present study is an attempt to analyze the curriculum for the Nursing Department of the College of Medicine, Busan National University and to examine some correlationships among various test results of different courses in order to recommend improvements in the curriculum for the department mentioned above.
2. The Method
A) Some publications related to nursing education in Korea and the United States were used for reference.
B) The correlationships among different courses were examined by the Spearman Rank Correlation test with reference to 51 senior students enrolled¢¥ for the academic year 1976 to analyze the appropria¡©teness of the curriculum concerned.
C) The curriculum was reviewed from the viewpoint of a theoritical background.
Areas of the curriculum are divided into 5 course sections of general education, supportive science, the major, clinical practice, teacher preparation course sections.
First, General education course section is classified as symboli ,, empirics, aesthetics, synnoethics, ethics and synoptics by Phenix realms of meaning.
Second, Supportive science course section contains physical, biological, social, behavioral and medical science.
Third, The major course section includes fundamental and all other nursing course section.
Fourth, Clinical practice is practice of all the major course section in nursing and finally, Teacher preparation course section divided into several categories according to the instructions of the Mini¡©stry of Education.
3. The Results
A) Analysis of the curriculum for the Department of Nursing, College of Medicine, Busan National University.
1) The analysis demonstrated the following breakdown of the total requirements of 180 credits: General Courses : 50 credits (27.27%)
Supportive Science Courses ;19 ? (10.56%)
Major Courses : 60 ? (33.33%)
Teacher Preparation Courses ;20 ? (11. 11%)
Clinical Practice Courses ;31 ? (17.22%)
2) General education does not contain synnoethics according to the Phenix model.
3) The supportive sciences are concentrated too much on biological and medical science in the 2nd year.
4) 60 credits (33,33%) are given for the major course in the 3rd and 4th year.
5) 31 credits are given for clinical practice in the 3rd and 4th year.
6) Credits for teacher preparation are given equally in each year.
B) Spearman rank correlation coefficients of points in each course are significant at the risk level of 1% except those between general education and clinical practice.
